The Success of Hemp helping Humanity

What is Hemp?

Hemp, or industrial hemp, is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for industrial use. Since hemp and marijuana both are derived from the Cannabis Sativa L. plant. It is seen as a bad boy with a stigma attached to it because it is related to marijuana. But the truth is, they have genetic differences, appearances, and chemical composition.

I was one of those people who viewed the word hemp with a negative connotation. I even caught myself picking up a tube of lip balm that contained it at Walmart and looking around to see if anybody saw me reading the label.

Then I realized how ridiculous I was being. If it is illegal, it wouldnt be in lip balm being sold at Walmart. I decided to educate myself to see exactly what all hemp is good for. I already knew it is in rope. Its in soap and its even one of the fibers in our Toke Lyf line of t-shirts being launched January 1, 2021.

But what I DIDN’T know blew me away. The more I read, the more I researched. The more I researched, the more I learned. I did not realize that Hemp flowers, leaves, seed, seed oil and protein can be used as food or medicine. The CBD oil alone can be extracted from the plant and used for medicinal purposes to create relief for a wide variety of ailments.

Uses of Hemp

It was mind boggling how many industries use hemp. As I mentioned earlier, it is in rope. But did you know it is also in textiles, paper, building materials, clothing, shoes, food, paper, bio plastics, insulation and even in biofuel? Hemp can also be used to make certain types of milk, oils and cheese substitutes.

I think the thing that intrigued me the most was the number of personal hygiene products that can be made with hemp. Hemp seed oil is wonderful in soaps, lotions, bath salts, and lip balm. It creates a product that is non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog your pores. It is also very soothing on the skin and will help reduce redness and inflammation.

How are Hemp & CBD related?

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It is the second most common of the active ingredients of cannabis (marijuana). While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, which is a cousin of the marijuana plant. CBD is available legally in most of the United States, even though the Federal Government does not consider it legal. Many states have passed specific laws expressly aimed at the use of CBD for medicinal purposes. It has been used to help with childhood epileptic seizures, chronic arthritis pain and back and join pain that are otherwise hard to control.

The history of medicinal cannabis goes back to ancient times. Ancient physicians in many parts of the world mixed cannabis into medicines to treat pain and other ailments. In the 19th century, cannabis was introduced for therapeutic use in Western Medicine.

One has to ponder, why so much is being spent on research annually by the private sector and the government on something that was proving over 4,000 years ago to be effective. There are many interesting articles to be read about the financial funding. The most interesting thing I have seen is an article on where Cathleen O’Grady reported this interesting tidbit, “Just over $1 billion came from the biggest funder, the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), which doled out far more money to research cannabis misuse and its negative effects than on using cannabis and cannabis-derived chemicals as a therapeutic drug.”

In conclusion, this gal is going to go back to Walmart and purchase that tube of hemp lip balm. I think it is time to see what all the excitement is about.
